Geo-blocking in EU over: What Does It Mean for Online Shoppers?

Geo-blocking in EU over: What Does It Mean for Online Shoppers?

E-commerce traders will no longer be allowed to block or limit customers’ access to their online interface for reasons of nationality or place of residence.

According to the European Commission (EC), the ban on the geo-blocking is an important element of the EU’s Digital Single Market Strategy.

The regulation was enforced in March, however it did not come into effect till recently. The reason for the delay was the time needed for the adaptation of the online sellers.

What’s changing

The directive aims at removing barriers to the e-commerce. There are so many online stores that refuse to trade with customers because they live in certain countries.

According to the European Commission, this is unjustified, and everyone should have equal access to the online market, as well as the right for protection while shopping online.

The whole initiative is part of the Digital Single Market Strategy among EU member states. The European regulation prohibits the blocking of geographical principles in EU countries. This puts an end to the discrimination of the Single European Market based on the nationality or domicile of the buyer.

However, traders reserve the right to deliver or not to a particular country. The new rules will also apply to services – among them hotel reservations, car hire or purchase of concert tickets, as well as, non-audio-visual electronically supplied services, such as e-books, music, games and software

Your Domains after Brexit? .EU registration changes

Your Domains after Brexit? .EU registration changes

.EU domain names registration changes and Brexit

Due to the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, the European Commission has made the decision to revoke existing .EU domain names and stop selling new .EU domains, to UK residents. So if your domain names are registered with an existing business or address withing the UK you need to take immediate action. The official timing for everything depends on how the withdrawal proceeds. The earliest that EURid – the registry for .EU domains – will revoke existing .EU domains from UK residents is March 30, 2019. This date can change, as Brexit negotiations are currently ongoing.

More information can be found at EURid’s official notice.

What are my options?

  • If you have a valid address in the European Union that is not in the UK – you can update your domain registrant contact to keep the domain valid. Please note that you must use a valid registrant contact address according to valid ICANN guidelines.

  • If changing the address is not a valid option for you – you will need to find another domain name that is not .EU. There are many options out there for you, including .UK and .CO.UK domains, or other ones relevant for your specific business needs.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The sad fact that Brexit is approaching is also affecting the ways Digital Marketing is conducted (as this is not an isolated topic from the whole economic & business landscape). There is nothing you should be worried about but we recommend you to stay up to date with the changes and industry status quo updates as, if you are conducting business within or with the UK, which is somehow related to the EU, the standards which were applicable until now will gain new shape we all will need to comply with.
